BentSpoke's spent grain making an unusual return for the Start of Spring Party

Richard and Carole Malted barley is at the heart of the beer making process. When we're done with the mash here at BentSpoke our friends at the Quatre Saisons Farm take it away to feed to their pigs. This Saturday seven of those pigs are coming back to BentSpoke to feed the public at our Start of Spring Party at BentSpoke's Mitchell Cannery. Once the spent grain is taken away we're not used to having it come back but this makes a nice change!

About Quatre Saisons

paddock2plate "Quatre Saisons is a family owned and run, high welfare, free-range stud grazing property where we enjoy a simple life based on a traditional mixed farming model," said the farm's Carole Gatt. "The choices we have made in land management, preserving and enhancing the natural biodiversity found on Quatre Saisons, means we choose to have a small number of top quality animals that enjoy a stress-free and comfortable environment. "At Quatre Saisons, we have a keen awareness of the interconnectedness of the bush and our smallholding's productivity. The rugged shale and quartzite ridges allow large quantities of crystal clear water to filter through the forest and on to nourish the pasture providing rich native forage for our animals producing the finest quality natural, rare breed, ethically raised beef, dairy, pork, lamb and poultry. "Our approach to traditional animal husbandry and a very limited stud breeding program supports the health of our country and provides the highest breed standard we can achieve. We have sourced top bloodlines to ensure our genetic lines are world class. This is reflected in the quality and resilience of our live stock. natural pigs "Piglets that have matured slowly, suckled and weaned at a time chosen by the sow, that have been able to forage and follow its natural instincts to wallow and sleep in the sunshine, and run in the rain, produce succulent fantastic tasting meat. These Wessex Saddleback piglets are very social pigs, with surprisingly placid temperaments that is a reflection of their calm and natural handling. "Allowed to remain in family groups, the sows great maternal instincts produce large volumes of milk to feed their piglets off natural grazing, supplemented with high protein spent brewers grain, locally sourced whole grains and cornmeal. "It is well documented that using brewers grains as animal feed alleviates the environmental impact of the brewing process. "Spent brewery grains contain up to 20% protein dry weight and up to 60% fibre and are useful additions to animal feed being the major waste product of the brewing process, totalling about 85 percent of total brewery waste. Most breweries brew several times a week ??? if not daily ??? year-round, and spent grains are continuously generated. If the brewer has no way to get rid of them, he must pay for their disposal. Sharing this resource with local farms is the environmentally appropriate way to manage a very useful ???waste??? product. Grain supplemented, pastured, open range pigs really do taste better!"
