Limited Release: Descent 19

We celebrated our 5th birthday with the launch of our new limited release Bending Spoke series. Our birthday beer will be the first in the series, making the much-anticipated release accessible to customers outside Canberra for the first time. Descent 19 is BentSpoke’s 5th birthday beer and the first in our exclusive Bending Spoke series. “The Bending Spoke series is designed to push the beer flavour boundaries, it celebrates the adventurous spirit of our brew team.” says head brewer and co-owner Richard Watkins. RIS started its journey when Emperor Peter the Great opened up Czarist Russia to the English in the early 1800s. They needed a beer that wouldn’t freeze on its journey deep into Russia, so they brewed strong stouts at 10% ABV. Higher in alcohol than traditional stouts they named them Russian Imperial Stouts. Our head brewer, Richard Watkins was the first brewer in Australia to brew a RIS, way back in 1999. BentSpoke Brewing Co has always celebrated its birthday with the release of a RIS in June every year. For the past nine months, our RIS has aged in American oak bourbon barrels, allowing the vanilla and whisky characters to invade the Russian Imperial Stout. Late in May, our brewers expertly blended it with a fresh RIS, bringing out all the best of its old and new characteristics. For the first time ever, our exclusive birthday beer will be packaged, making it accessible to customers outside Canberra, and meaning that you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home. The roasty, bitter black malt and leather-like esters from the stout integrated with the bourbon barrel aging complete this complex and rewarding Russian Imperial Stout. Starting a downhill descent into the unknown requires a level of composure to make it to the bottom in one piece, Decent 19 like its 4 predecessors requires plenty of composure, a little birthday magic and a nice warm fire to get to the bottom of this beer!
