Canberra Beer History

Canberra’s beer story begins long before today’s breweries, taprooms and local favourites. From prohibition in the newly established Federal Capital Territory to the arrival of pioneering brewpubs and a flourishing independent brewing scene, the capital’s relationship with beer has taken plenty of twists and turns.

In a little over a century, Canberra’s beer story has travelled from prohibition in the Federal Capital Territory to a diverse community of local brewers.

The early brewpubs of the late 1980s and 1990s helped establish brewing on ACT soil, while the generations that followed continued to build on that foundation. Today, the names, breweries and beers may have changed, but each forms part of the continuing story of beer in the nation’s capital.
